Pagan and Wicca

"Wicca is a form of Neopaganism and modern Witchcraft. Wicca is a religion. Wicca is a spiritual path. Wicca is a way of life... and Wicca has the potential to be the most relevant and important new spiritual development of the 21st Century and supplant the irrational and superstitious religions prevalent in the past 2,000 years - as long as we can learn to keep it progressive and guard against its commercial exploitation and trivilisation." - Kevin Saunders, 2009

The Month of Aquarius

Imbolc

Many modern Pagans celebrate following a system aligned not to nature, but to a faulty calendar devised by the Catholic Church (for more information see 12-spoke Wheel of the Year). Kevin encourages those following Wicca to set aside the Wiccan 8-spoke Wheel, that was only invented by Wicca's founders less than 60 years ago, in favour of this ancient system that has been in use for at least 5,000 years.

The month of Aquarius began on January 20th.

CandlesImbolc this year falls on Saturday, 30th January, being the first full moon in the month of Aquarius.  Pagans who follow the Christian Gregorian calendar may celebrate it on either the 1st or 2nd of February, though as you know I don't see the point in following a calendar that rarely has any connection with any real or natural events if one is a pagan... or any other religion for that matter!

Imbolc is one of the four major Sabbats and is a fixed Air festival.  As such, it is all about bringing the element of Air into your home.  Even though it may be cold, open and all the doors and windows for a while and allow that fresh air to cleanse your home and start embarking on a thorough spring clean.  It is a very good time to allow the goddess into your home and celebrate her around the hearth if you are lucky enough to have one.  It is a festival of light, family and home, so once you have cleansed your house it is a good idea to light as many candles as you can around the home (being careful where you leave them because the idea is to cleanse the home and not burn it down!).  Light plenty of incense, and when the children have gone to bed, if you have any, hold a short ritual to welcome the goddess into your homes and into your lives.

Maybe coming spring be the dawn of all the projects for the year that you were planning since Yule. May all the seeds your plant this year be fruitful.

With love and blessings to all,
Kevin Saunders.
