Kevin Saunders has followed the Neo-Pagan path of Wicca for many years, he is an internationally acclaimed author of two books (so far) on Wiccan Spirituality, is a third degree High Priest and has been a campaigner on animal rights, human rights and ecological / environmental issues for many years. The Summer Solstice

(starting 21st June 2009 by the Gregorian Calendar)

Many modern Pagans celebrate following a system aligned not to nature, but to a faulty calendar devised by the Catholic Church (for more information see 12-spoke Wheel of the Year). Kevin encourages those following Wicca to set aside the Wiccan 8-spoke Wheel, that was only invented by Wicca's founders less than 60 years ago, in favour of this ancient system that has been in use for at least 5,000 years.

"On 21st June we celebrate the Summer Solstice, the day when the Sun God is at His height. The Solstice defines the start of the month of Cancer a cardinal water sign.

The Full Moon this month on the 7th July and on the 23rd July we celebrate the Major Sabbat (held on the fixed elemental signs of the zodiac) of Lughnassadh when we enter Leo.

The height of Summer already? The Wheel seems to turn so quickly at times! Well the baby birds have all fledged, everything smells fresh and green, it certainly is a wonderful time of year for energy.The crops are growing in the garden and everything is displaying its fertility.

May you tune in to the positive energy of the God especially at this time of year, but don’t forget the Goddess is always close by and that She should never be neglected either. Indeed it is the Sun God AND Earth Goddess working hard in harmony that helpls our main crops of food come to fruition over the coming months. There is no better way of experiencing the Goddess and God than engaging in a little crop or flower growing, even if all you have space for is a small window box... no excuses now! Go for it.
