Pagan and Wicca

"Wicca is a form of Neopaganism and modern Witchcraft. Wicca is a religion. Wicca is a spiritual path. Wicca is a way of life... and Wicca has the potential to be the most relevant and important new spiritual development of the 21st Century and supplant the irrational and superstitious religions prevalent in the past 2,000 years - as long as we can learn to keep it progressive and guard against its commercial exploitation and trivilisation." - Kevin Saunders, 2009

Wicca - Recommended Reading

Kevn Saunders - author and High Priestwiccan reading listThere are a number of very good and inspiring books on Wicca and Paganism in general. Sadly, there are also a vast number of 'spell' books and others on witchcraft that are simply a waste of paper and would be best left on the shelf (or recycled into something useful). As Wicca becomes more and more popular, the more commercial publishers are taking the advantage of a marketing situation and, as a result, watering down what could be a most valuable spiritual path.

I have listed a number of books on Wicca and Witchcraft related subjects below, as well as a number of other spiritually devoted books that aren't necessarily Wiccan or even Pagan, but have certainly influenced the greater depth of the Wiccan path.

The Witches Bible - by Stewart and Janet Farrar, Published by Phoenix, ISBN 0-919345-92-1

This book is a compilation fromt two of the most important Wiccan works written by Stewart and Janet Farrar and essential reading for any modern witch.

Book of Hours (Prayers to the Goddess) - by Galen Gillotte, Published by Llewellyn Worldwide, ISBN 1-56718-273-9

One of the most inspiring book of Wiccan prayer and ritual and one that I would most definately take to a desert island (when I can find one that is truly deserted!) Deeply inspiring and a treasure to have on the book shelf or by the altar.

Book of Hours (Prayers to the God) - by Galen Gillotte, Published by Llewellyn Worldwide, ISBN 0-7387-0260-9

The necessary companion book to the above (Prayers to the Goddess).

Practical Occultism - by Dion Fortune and Gareth Knight, Published by Thoth Publications, ISBN 1-870450-47-7

This is one of the few serious books I have ever read on the occult and is valuable as a guide no matter what path one follows. Full of wisdom and guidance, Dion Fortune does not mess with words but gets right to the point. If you think Wicca is all about casting spells and material agradisment then this is definately one to read before you proceed any further!

The Witches Tarot - by Ellen Cannon Reed, Published by Llewellyn Publications, ISBN 0-87542-668-9

The tarot is a valuable tool for any witch, Wiccan or otherwise, and has helped shape Wicca and many other paths of the centurues. This Wiccan look at the tarot is incredibly useful and inspiring and is especially useful when applied to Ellen Canon Reed's own tarot pack which I use and like a great deal, even though I usually come back to the standard Rider-Waite deck.

The Witches Qabala - by Ellen Cannon Reed, Published by Samuel Weiser, ISBN 0-87728-880-1

This is an important companion to the bok above (The Witches Tarot). The Tree of Life is a valuable tool in Wicca (as well as other occult paths) and a serious grounding, offered by such a book, will help Wiccans build a greater understanding of the roots of the Wiccan religion as well as guidance on spiritual growth within Wicca.

Other Occult books of value to Wiccans

Wicca was introduced in the 1950s by Gerald Gardner and was influenced by a great many occult sources including Christian Mysticism, Freemasonry, Buddhism as well as traditoinal Celtic Paganism. The following books have deeply inspired my own Gardnerian path and include many of the influences drawn on by Wicca's founders.

The Secret Doctrine (Volume 1 - Cosmogenesis & Volume 2 Anthropgenesis) by Helena Blavatsky, Published by the Theospohical Press, ISBN 1-55700-002-6

The essential foundation of modern theosophy that sparked a great deal of interest in the occult at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

The complete works of Alice Bailey - for a full listing of Alice Bailey's works see Lucis Trust

I have the entire works of Alice Bailey on my bookshelf, and I would be lost without her. Although this is another deeply theosophical work, I find the teachings readily tranferable into my Wiccan tradition. Alice Bailey has inspired me to look deeper and test my faith. She adds a great deal of depth to the works of Helena Blavatsy. Some may find this heavy reading, but it is worth the effort.

Transcendental Magic (Its Doctrine and Ritual - by Eliphas Levi, Published by Senate, ISBN 1-85891-379-9

The doctrines and rituals of transcendental magic are thoroughly explored in this work which traces occult philosophy through the ages and across continents. Essential reading and an invaluable reference book for the occult student.

Magick in theory and practice - by Aleister Crowley, Published by Castle, ISBN 1-55521-766-4

Aleister Crowley - often maliciously and quite wrongly condemned as 'evil' by the ignorant - he is the man who put the 'K' in Magick. He was almost certainly one of Gerald Gardner's greatest influences and possibly one of the most important personalities in the Golden Dawn mystery tradition.
